Our society sends something of a mixed message about depression. On the one hand there are repeated messages on how serious a problem it is while on the other, there is the sense that anyone who suffers from depression and anxiety should be able to “get over it” and get on with life. Indeed, depression support groups spend a great deal of time convincing members that their depression symptoms are, in fact, an illness and not a sign of emotional weakness.
Like all ailments, there are varying degrees of stress and what might be debilitating to one person is manageable to another. But, regardless of the severity of the problem, there are several warning signs that are common to most who suffer with anxiety and depression.
What follows are several signs that can be considered as indications that either yourself, or a loved one, may well be dealing with depression.
WITHDRAWAL. When we become really depressed, most of want to just get away from everyone and everything. Of course, this is not the best course to follow as being alone just makes matters worse.
INTROSPECTION. Very often a major part of depression is not being able to move past certain events. Dwelling about things that have already happened and brooding about possibilities in the future just make you feel worse. Such negative rumination will also tempt you to misinterpret event that are really neutral as negatives.
SELF MEDICATING. When depressed, the temptation to over indulge with alcohol, or drugs, can be almost irresistible. But using chemical aids without the advice and control of a doctor will, almost always, cause your depression to worsen.
NOT EXERCISING. For the person who exercises regularly, to miss a series of workouts is an almost sure signal something isn’t right. The same goes for missing any activities that were once enjoyed.
THINKING NEGATIVELY. Being depressed leaves you very susceptible to all sorts of negative thoughts. Looking at life through a negative lens almost guarantees that things are not going to work out the way you want.
If you have any of these indicators, or if a loved one has them, they might very well be telling you that you are suffering from depression and it is time to take positive actions to relieve the depression, anxiety, and stress.
